About The Order of the Founders and Patriots of America
The Order of the Founders and Patriots of America was organized in 1896. The Order is governed in accordance with a constitution and bylaws. The constitution contains provisions regulating the affairs of all the Societies in the Order and thus renders individual State Society constitutions unnecessary. However, each Society has its own set of bylaws that agree in general terms with those of the Order.
The general supervision of the Order rests in a General Court that exercises executive, legislative, and judicial functions and meets annually in May. The General Court comprises the general officers of the Order, Past Governors General, Past Deputy Governors General, the Councillors General of the Societies, the officers of the Societies of the Order then holding office, and the Editor of the Bulletin. The officers of the Order are a Governor General, Deputy Governor General, Chaplain General, Secretary General, Treasurer General, Attorney General, Registrar General, Genealogist General, Historian General, and deputies of these general officers. The General Court constitutes new Societies; issues diplomas of membership, insignia and rosettes; issues blank applications for membership; requires reports from the various Societies, etc. It is supported by assessments upon the Societies.
Local Societies are modeled on that of the Order with similar officers and councillors. The officers and councillors form a council that manages the affairs of the Society between the meetings of the membership. No one shall serve more than two successive terms except by a unanimous vote. Annual meetings of the local Societies are to be held before the first of May. Societies are active in the States of Alabama, Arizona, California, Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kentuckiana (a regional Society serving Indiana and Kentucky), Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
