Hi! I am a graduate student at the University of Maine currently writing a
doctoral dissertation about the War of 1812. Specifically, I am writing about
smuggling during the war and the military & privateers involvement in
stopping smuggling. Does the Society have primary sources concerning the War of
1812? I like your website, it has some good info. -Josh Smith, UMaine.

hey great site!
I only wish that my family
participated, but no, they were pacifists who lived
in the invaded colony of Upper Canada.
well anyway, great site, and keep up the good work!

I have recently been studying Oliver Wendell Homes, and was distressed when I
saw that you have his purpose for the poem to be a tribute to "Old
Glory." Though I can understand the logic behind your reasoning, his
main purpose in writing "Old Ironsides" was to save the Warship
CONSTITUTION from being scrapped for it's material. I would ask that you
please consider this, and if there is something that you have found that I have
not, concerning this poem, please post it on your website. Thank you
